Phases of our project

Phase 1:
The first phase of our project is to first target a small group of students and 'test the waters', experimenting with different coaching and reading methods from our extensive research. We plan to find potential problems and come up with solutions before the second phase. We intent to understand and evaluate children from single parent homes and observe their behaviour. One to one mentoring would be our preferred initial buddy method to be used in the first phase and evaluate is success.
The target number of students would be around 10 and the reading session would be 1 hour each , once a week at any library in Singapore before expansion. Our phase one would also consist of Evaluation of our success on the students and Personal reflections to analyse how smoothly our programme is carried-out. The aim of the programme is also to cater to the parent's need and tailor our project to their request or what seems fit. Furthermore, the incorporation of vocabulary flashcards are planned to be integrated into the session to help the children with their mastery of the english language. Basically the purpose of the first phase is to test run our methods and our own grasp of our ability to control children, we hope that we could attend talks or workshops during the process also to strengthen our abilities as well as our knowledge on the issue.

Phase 2:
The main aim of Phase 2 is to expand our project and train a total of 15 volunteers so that they will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to be able to carry out our program smoothly and read to15kids.

Currently, our project is only catered to 10 kids, all of which are living in the West side of Singapore - namely, Bukit Batok and Choa Chu Kang. We are hoping that by bringing in more kids to this programme, we will be able to inculcate the habit of reading to more children as reading builds a strong foundation for their languages. Therefore, in phase 2, we hope to meet the target of 15 kids. However, in addition to the previous batch of kids who have already indicated that they would be more than happy to continue the reading session with us, it is impossible for us will be able to cope.

As such, we will be bringing in volunteers who have already indicated that they would very much like to help out for our project and read to the new batch of children. Some of the volunteers are living in other areas in Singapore, like Seng Kang and Marine Parade. As the volunteers are unfamiliar with our project and the way which we carry out the sessions, we have already had a few training sessions where they are briefed on what to do and how to do it. As far as possible, we will also try to explain the rationale for adopting certain features and when the volunteers comment on the structure of our program, we will take note of it and discuss if it will contribute to the betterment of our reading sessions. Besides that, we try our best to bring volunteers along to our reading sessions so that they will have a rough idea of how the reading session will run. We will also try to present different scenarios where they might face possible problems and we will teach them how to solve it. We have already trained the volunteers in hope that they become exact duplicates of us - following the structure of our program and to carry out reflections after each session.

Phase 3
In this phase, we hope that we will be able to expand our project to an island-wide scale to all mums. Our project’s outreach will be further enhanced if expanded nationwide. By recruiting even more volunteers and expanding to project to the corners of Singapore, we hope to allow for our project to reach out to even more single-mum kids. We also aim for these volunteers to aid us in the development of this project, by passing on their shared experiences to others, and inspiring more to come on board and realize the joy in reading with, and to kids. Details of phase 3 have yet to be confirmed, but will be done in the near future.
