Breeding Reading

Welcome to our our webpage for our Service Learning Project titled “Breeding Reading”. We are a group of Secondary 4 students from Hwa Chong Institution with an interest in common, to serve the needs of the community.
Our project basically targets all kids aged 7 - 12 from single-mum families. Why single mum families, you may ask. Well, after attending a Meet-the-Peoples Session at Bukit Timah GRC, we have found out that single-mums are weighed down with the responsibility as the sole-breadwinner of the family. At the same time, they have to worry about providing an all rounded education to their child. As such, they usually neglect the inculcation of a good reading habit in their child, something which we believe that should be of utmost importance during a child's growing up years.
Therefore we have decided to embark on this project where we conduct 1-1 reading sessions with a child from the single-mum family for 12 weeks. During this 12 weeks, we carry out reading, the implementation of flashcards and playing vocabulary games, all of which are crafted to suit the child's needs.
We proceed with reflections after each session which includes the tracking of the child's progress, a reading level checklist and personal reflections. All of these are uploaded to our personal blogs and the links are at the side.
More information and our research is to be found on our stand-alone pages. Have fun navigating!
Our gratitude goes out to each and every child that has participated in our reading program so far and the mums who have been very cooperative and understanding. We would also like to thank all our volunteers for taking off time from their busy schedule to come on board our program and to contribute to the betterment of single-mums and their children. Of course we would like to thank NTUC, Women Development Secretariat and Mdm Halimah Yacob. Last but not least, we would like to thank our mentor. Without your help, this project would have been impossible.
